If you’ve always wanted to learn how to scuba dive, discover new adventures or simply see the wondrous world beneath the waves, this is where it starts. The PADI Open Water Diver course is the world’s most popular scuba course, and has introduced millions of people to the adventurous diving lifestyle.
The PADI Open Water Diver Course is run over 3 days. These can be consecutive days or done over weekends. We start courses daily and they can be run to fit your schedule. The Course is run for anyone 10 years and older.
- Knowledge development (Done online before the first day of the course) to

We email you all the theory which you can complete in the comfort of your own home. Once this is complete you can visit us for your 3 days of practical work.
Meet at Calypso Shop at Ushaka Marine World at 8:45am in order to complete paperwork. All / most of your home study work should already have been completed by this stage. You will be taken to the swimming pool to learn the necessary skills for the course, after which you will complete any theory work / videos that may be outstanding.
Your Instructor will be taking you for your first 2 boat dives, where you will practice the skills you learned in the pool, as well as have a shallow fun dive so that you use the equipment and gain confidence and comfort with the gear. After these dive sessions you will log your dives and complete a short multiple choice exam.
This is the day you have been waiting for, when you will have the opportunity to do your 2 qualifying dives with your Instructor. Our dives are generally done around the Bluff area as these reefs allow for easy diving with beautiful corals and fish. Our launch site from Durban is protected and is therefore an easy launch with a short boat ride of 5-15 minutes.
The Course Includes:
Course materials (Online Manual & Dive Table) Confined Pool modules (practicing skills) – one dive in the Ushaka Aquarium with over 1700 fish. These are continued in a swimming pool. Two Shore entries to familiarize yourself with the equipment, practice skills and correct buoyancy as well as three Boat dives from Durban.
Use of all soft gear & hard gear for the duration of the course and PADI Certification.
Children’s Age Requirements
The PADI Open Water Course can be done by anyone older than 10 years, but some restrictions may apply depending on the age. Children older than 14 years can dive anywhere in the world to a depth of 18 meters. Anyone between ages 12-14 year olds must dive with an adult certified diver, and are allowed to 18m. 10-11 year olds are restricted to diving with a parent, guardian or PADI Professional to 12 meters/40 feet maximum depth.
Highest PADI Standard
The PADI Open Water Diver course aims to build confident and self-motivated divers to the highest PADI standard. The course is structured to around the student to ensure your comfort throughout the course. Having plenty of time for skill development and practice will ensure you complete the course confident in your abilities to continue diving in the future.
Our dive courses can be run as consecutive days or done at your convenience over separate days; each day will run from 09.00 – approximately 16.30.
Extend Your Qualification To 30 Meters Depth Limit
If you thoroughly enjoyed your PADI Open Water Course and cannot wait to get back into the water, we can recommend doing our PADI Advanced Course as well, which allows you the freedom to dive to 30m.
This course will take an additional 3 days to complete, again including all required equipment and the PADI Advanced manual. Your Advanced Course will include 6 dives. Two of the dives are compulsory, being the Deep Dive and a Navigation Dive. We include Peak Performance Buoyancy as a free extra and then you choose three other dives from the following: Wreck Dive, Fish ID, Underwater Naturalist, Night Dive, Boat Dive, Search & Recovery and Drift Dive.
The Advanced course on its own is R4500. The combo price for Advanced and Open Water is R9500.00 (if booked and paid simultaneously).
